- Best for
- A landmark sand day if you will swim away from the Pier. Playground and picnic without the carnival at Ocean Park. Boardwalk, Muscle Beach, or the breakwater at Venice.
- Less suitable for
- Anyone treating the pier as the swim beach, bringing a dog onto Santa Monica sand, or following GPS to Ocean and Colorado.
- Best beach stretch
- State Beach north or south of the pier, at an open tower, if you want sand plus the landmark. Ocean Park if you want playground and picnic. Venice if you meant the boardwalk — then swim west of Ocean Front Walk.
- Best time
- Dry-weather beach season. After rain, stay out 72 hours. Recheck the DPH map that morning — a water warning is not a sand closure.
- Car needed?
- No, if you are coming for the pier — the Metro E Line serves it. Yes, if you want a specific lot. The County beach shuttle is Venice only; it does not serve Santa Monica State Beach.
- Current conditions
-
NWS LOX Friday, Aug 14: Los Angeles County beaches rip risk Moderate; surf 2–4 ft; water 63–75 °F. Saturday, Aug 15: High rip risk, surf 3–5 ft. Do not swim within 100 yards of the Pier or Tower 12 (DPH Aug 13). Montana is cleared.
- Biggest mistake
- Getting in the water under the pilings — or letting GPS take you to the closed Colorado drive-on and calling that “park at the pier.”
